Possible to buy a good Transit for £3000?

Postby Pies » Mon Dec 24, 2018 7:30 am

Hi guys. Looking to purchase my first Transit for transporting 2 mx bikes within the next 2 months. Have joined your wonderful forum to glean as much info as I can before I start looking.

As per my original question, is it possible to but a decent Transit for £3000? Ideally i'll be looking for a SWB with a medium roof. Most of what I'm seeing in my price range is the 2.2 engined version, how is this for reliability? Are there any impending doom scenarios I need to look out for other than the standard diesel engine stuff such as turbos, injectors, DMF & EGR valves etc? I know rust can play a big factor, generally where are the key areas to check?

Also is it true with the 2.2 engine, any version under 125ps has a solid flywheel and not dual mass?

Also I see different models such a T280, T350 etc, what do these model numbers denote?

Thanks in advance.

Yes you can get a decent van for sub 3k.

Rust = have a good look underneath, turkey built vans rust less then Southampton built vans, look for TT in the vin no.

Reliability = if the vans been properly serviced and taken care of then there as reliable as anything else.

T260, 280, 350 ect is the total vehicle weight (van and payload) so a T280 has a max weight of 2800kgs and the T350 has a max weight of 3500kgs.
RUST IS LIGHTER THEN CARBON FIBRE

57 transit 85t260 2.2 swb, moondust silver.

Thank you for your reply.

Is the 2.2 deemed the better engine over the 2.4? Is there a quick way of differentiating between a Turkey built van to a Southampton one?

If the vin no has TT its turkey if it has DB its Southampton.

2.2 is fwd 2.4 is rwd so its personal preference, but the 2.4 has a raise load area floor to accommodate the prop shaft.

If you need to be wheeling bikes into the back, you'll be better off with the lower floor (and hence, taller load height) of a FWD. An un-loaded 260 will usually sit lower at the back than a 280 or 300

260/280/300 are all class 4 MOT, which are easily available. Most of these you see will be SWB/MWB and FWD

330/350 are all class 7, which not all MOT stations can do. Most of these you see will be MWB/LWB and RWD

1997 Mk5 SWB 115 Minibus 70ps Di (Gone, but not forgotten!)

2008 Mk7 SWB T280 Medium Roof 85PS 2.2 TDCi - Also Vantunered
