2017 2.0 Starting issue

Postby Thugster69 » Wed Mar 15, 2023 7:50 pm

Hi all,

Been running transits for years and often found answers on here for my van problems but never posted before...

But now need some idea's for a solution...

Vehicle is a 2017 RWD dropside 2.0 - about 85k miles

Issue is with starting from cold, the only way to get it going is to switch the ignition on, leave it for a min, switch it off and repeat the process around 4-5 times. After this then crank the engine and it will hesitantly start up firing first on one cylinder then two then away you go after about 10 seconds. If you try and start before this process then you do not have a hope of it starting.

Once its running it drives perfect and once warm starts first turn of the key.

Changed glow plugs, swapped glow plug module, changed low pressure lift pump in tank, tried everything obvious on the forscan software but don't really know enough about the software so not delved too much into it.

Seems fuel related but taken it to three garages and no one can come up with a fix. We have been told everything from compression issues, glow plug problems, ECU problems, low pressure fuel pump problems, wiring issue's, etc etc.

So, if anyone has any idea on what to start looking for then please let me know before I set fire to it..

Thanks in advance..

No fault codes.

i am a transit specialist and these 2.0 mk 8s are coming in thick and fast, we are finding head gasket failures are common but valve seat failure even more so , seems as if the seats are made of a material that becomes porous, re-cutting is impossible replacement seats only option. fitting better quality seats, a light skim, new quality head gasket, new bolts, and bingo instant starting
it was like that before i touched it !!

Thanks for the quick response..

Sounds like you know what you are talking about and I was hoping it would be something else but it makes sense...

One more question.... why does leaving the ignition on for 5 mins get it started, that part makes no sense to me at all....???

Hi, ive the same starting issue on 2018 2.0l on just over 70000 been having for a few months. Originally told a injector issue so went to a specialist and now there saying they suspect low on compression although they not done a compression test!?
has anybody tried what 'dieseldel' says and have you had good results? Anywhere to get done in the NW?
