Rear Disc Brake Pad Change on a 2006 Transit Connect

Postby BrownKnows » Mon May 23, 2011 5:35 pm

Hi, My connect failed its MOT, and I'm doing the jobs myself. I've just changed the front pads easily enough, but before I start the rear pads replacement. I thought I would check to see, if there was anything different on the rears. i.e. will I need to use any special tools to push the brake cylinders back - I used a G clamp on the fronts. Also, how difficult is it to adjust the hand brake? Thank you!

Probably need a caliper wind back tool to screw the piston back into the caliper, shouldn't need to adjust the handbrake once the new pads are fitted. :)

yep if the brakes are the same as the focus then you do need wind back tools

you might be able to do it with a pair of long nose pliers, open them up and put each side of the prongs on opposite sides of the piston (you'll see grooves on the piston to locate it on the brake pad so put the prongs in these grooves) then using the pliers rotate the piston clockwise while pushing firmly

Thank you Blue Connection. Using long nose pliers did cross my mind, but I am fortunate enough to have my own hand tool business, so I've purchased a Draper ABS brake tool, which looks like it will do the job. Should arrive in the morning, so I will give that a go. Thanks again.

I'm recycling this old thread just to prove I searched before posting

That said, I don't understand. Why won't my rear caliper pistons wind back with a clamp, they won't, I've tried.
The pistons advance when the handbrake lever is pumped and stay out.

Also, it looks like I've got seized handbrake cables, how do you release the front end with the exhaust & heat shield in place?

You have to rotate piston in the caliper while pushing it back at the same time. Hence the use of a wind back tool.

One here will do the job.

Thanks Paul, not entirely sure how that works but kit is ordered.

While you're here,
Can you tell me how to get the handbrake cables out?

You don't nee to take handbrake cable off to replace pads - Just loosen it of at the handbrake lever

No, but I do if they are both seized solid, one won't even come back enough to unhook from the caliper.
The cables disappear behind the exhaust heatshield.
Please don't tell me it's exhaust & heatshield off :x

Just loosen it of at the handbrake lever

It will give enough slack to remove cable from caliper.

No you dont have to take the centre console out

Just pull up the hand brake gaiter and under the handbrake it the cable adjuster
Please don't send me PM's, i can't access them, when I try I get this:

Thanks Paul & Liteace.

Is it possible to draw out and refit new cables once released from inside the cab?
