12v ignition switched supply

Postby mtbmatt » Tue Mar 15, 2011 9:42 pm

Hi everyone.

New Connect owner, I have lots of plans for the van but first up is to get the gadgets sorted!

I want to connect something to a 12v socket and leave it plugged in behind the dash, but both 12v sockets in the cab seem to be permenant power, not switched on the ignition.
Is is possible to change this? On my Mondeo it is a 2 minute job by moving a fuse.

Hopefully there is a solution, even if it isn't quite as simple. Ideally don't want to cut wires, just use the existing 12v socket (removed from front).

That would do, but I think the fuse for the radio is 7.5 amp :?:
Be careful not to overload it.
(once you find out which one it is)

That would mean splicing into the wires, so ideally don't want to do that.

a sat nav, but I'm not able to cut the cable for that, so needs to be directly into a 12v socket.

Why not buy a socket adaptor, plug that in, and you have can a tripple socket on the end of that. (or more)

But that doesn't get around the ignition switched supply?

Oooooops, yeah sorry, keep forgetting that its live all the time.
Mind you, I have seen one that has a remote, presumably for switching each socket on or off??
Halfrauds I think.

Yep, here it is,

or another

This one looks good though, has 3 independant sockets with different length cable, all switched with led indicator,

If its a sat nav you want to power up why dont you rewire one of the power sockets to the switched live from the radio. Ford have spliced wires all over the van anyway.

Those switched units look like they might be OK.
Not an ideal solution, but better than having to cut wires!

Change of plan, I am going to splice into the radio wires.
I will need to connect a 12v socket, rather than the Sat Nav cable direct though.

Before I pull the radio out and have a good look, anyone know what wires are which on the standard loom? I am guessing I just need a positive and negative?

Hi All,
I have mounted and situated an isolator relay that requires a switched 12v power source. The two Cig lighter types in the dash of the transit are always on. Any idea which wire i can tap into so i can connect the required isolator wire to? I am guessing i can use a t-tap connector to tie into the switched 12v line, but cant seem to figure out which one this would be....?
thanks!

tapping in to the radio switched live may not work.when i replaced my headunit on my 58 reg sport i had to put in a new switched live from the fusebox to the headunit as the switch live from the ignition was same special thing and would not switch on the new unit.this has come up a couple of times on the forum.paul2012 has said something about this aswell on another thread
