In the papers for my non-uk 220 it says:

Max wt 2230
Max, front 1070
Max, rear 1290
Min load index 93

If the "divide by 4" is an actual UK rule, fine, but vans are generally not designed with equal load distribution font/rear.

So do we know what the correct load ratings are then?

Don't know if anyone else has had this suggested to them, but in a dispute with the dealer supplying my recently purchased used van, I argued that it shouldn't have 91T rated tyres on it with it being a LWB. They replaced the tyres after some to-ing and fro-ing, but countered with paperwork to show that the Connect is a Class 4 vehicle, and only Classes 5 and 7 are required to have correctly rated load index tyres for MOT purposes. I asked another MOT place to confirm this and it appears to be correct.

So, in short, you can legally have 91T rated tyres on a LWB Connect, and still be within the law..........the grey area being that you could be carrying weight within the limits of the vans capabilities, but not the tyres! And I don't yet know what would happen legally if that were shown to be the case.

Happy motoring!

Don't disagree, but mine just passed the MOT with 91Ts on the front, and they stood their ground when queried..........legally, it appears not to matter?

A question which I think I already know the answer to....

I have just put on some 205 55 16's on the van, a set of 4. Can my 195 65 15 steely still be used as a spare?

If not, do I get a 16" steely instead??

Not sure why I've looked at this a few weeks too late.

I'd considered going for this size as there are zillions of cheap choices. I was put off as nearly all 205/55 R16 are passenger car tyres so only 91V or 91W rated. There's just a few 94W load rated......... just a thought if you're running on reinforced 95T's.

The plot thickens..........I was looking at a set of Michelin winter tyres new on ebay at a price I couldn't ignore. My van's a T230 LWB. Since my run in with the MOT tester about passing my van when fitted with 91T tyres on, and his production of paperwork showing the Connect as being exempt from this due to it's MOT classification, I reckoned I'd be ok legally with 91T rated tyres.

When I spoke to the tyre place selling the examples I wanted, he suggested i wouldn't be covered by my insurance in the event of a blowout causing an accident. My insurance company, on the other hand, insist that if the van has a valid MOT, and 91T tyres are fitted at the time of an accident, they'll be ok with it, and cover isn't compromised.

I've ended up ordering the 95T Michelins, life's just too short to be wondering if you're really covered for the sake of £50 difference for 4 tyres.

I was a tester a connect is class 4 so is exempt from tyre load ratings...

But they are the only thing that keep your vehicle on the road so better of going with extra load that is what I did on my connect not worth the risk as we all know vans get loaded right up.

You're right, Marty.

Section 4.1.2 of the VOSA Mot Manual - Speed & Load Index checks only apply to Class 5 and Class 7 vehicles.

Additional ' Large' Class 4 checks also apply, but only to Class 4 vehicles +> 2500 Kg Gross Design Weight, so again the Connect is exempt.

not many vans are loaded to the max which is what tyres are rated to........but if you need to claim and they find the tyres are'nt weight rated don't moan if they don't pay out

Hi, i've been given a set on 16" mondeo alloys which have 205/55/16/91v tyres on, obviously i'll need a higher load rated tyre for my LWB connect, but i cant find any 205/55/16/95 tyres, they only have 94 xl available in that size, will these be ok or is there a different size tyre available for these wheels without throwing my speedo out. Thanks Adam
