Stuttering / misfire

Postby Pdawber » Tue Nov 27, 2018 12:27 am

Hi all,

My ford connect (2012, 1.8TDCI 90ps) stutters / misfires at around 1700rpm which is especially noticeable when changing down, cornering and then putting foot back on accelerator.

Here's what i've tried:
EGR cleaner spray via air intake
Reset ECU (disconnecting battery overnight method)
Blanked off EGR (no discernible difference after 100 miles so took it back off)
New Fuel filter
New air filter
Have listened with a screwdriver to injectors and think they all sound ok (can hear them all clicking when engine is idling)
No error codes with an OBD2 scanner

It's £100 to have all the injectors removed and tested at a diesel injector specialist - is that the next thing to do?

Cheers

could take the inlet off and clean it.........egr cleaner alone won't touch the grunge. might pay u to get the egr deleted

If you've got a scanner can you record live data?
I'm just wondering what the fuel pressure is doing while it's faulting.

Yes I think I can - I'll record it, see what it says and report back.

The egr and inlet manifold are together as one unit is that right? Can anyone point me to a removal / clean guide so I can see what's what please?

need to take turbo/exhaust manifold off to remove inlet/egr, used carb cleaner on mine and gave it a good soak then air dry it and fitted new gaskets

If the EGR has been blanked for testing purposes and the fault remained then isn't the EGR eliminated?

Cant read live data. Fitted all new fuel injectors and have a slighly higher mpg but the stutter is still there at 1750rpm upon change down and accelerator back on!

Though there's not starting trouble nor surges when motorway driving should I get the fuel pump tested?

Either that or change the PRV and / or fuel pressure sensor first?

Any thoughts from the forum

Throwing expensive parts at it with no results is a common story.
Maybe pay someone with the proper kit to do some investigation.

My next step is to get to the breakers find a set of: Fuel pressure control, fuel flow control & fuel pressure sensor & have a play, but I'm sure as hell not laying out £150+ for something that I don't think will fix it.
After that it's the injection specialist but no point in this weather it doesn't get hot enough to fault consistantly.

There's definitely some wisdom in that just so keen to keep learning and fixing as much as I can. I loathe going to any garage - I've never been anywhere yet where they care, are passionate or even interested in fixings thing beyond the opportunity to make money or tell me there's nothing wrong because the diagnostic machine says so.

I'll have a go with some sensors too I think after that I think it's a fuel pump inspection though shouldn't they always guarantee a fault code?

Things you can eliminate for free are the 3 air sensors & the EGR.
It will still run with any of the sensors unplugged and also with the EGR unplugged & blanked. You have done that.
Cam & crank sensors are about a tenner each.
Leak off test the injectors.
I would be interested in fuel pressure, Forscan will do this on a laptop.
Used pressure sensors are about 15 quid on eBay.
Hate for you to buy & fit a fuel pump and still have the issue!

Agreed! that's the fear! Thanks for your help.

Ordered new maf, map, cam sensors plus a fuel pressure regulator. Fingers crossed

Managed to get some live data. There was a stutter / misfire at the spike in mass air flow rate (yellow) at 550.

Don't know what i'm looking at tbh...?

Did you fit a new MAF?
That spike looks wrong to me, like a failing component.
Fuel pressure looks solid though.

Not yet but there's one in the post and on its way. I'd love it to be that!
