2015 SWB Connect Handling.

Postby siruncle » Sun Oct 07, 2018 2:59 pm

We have a 15 plate connect as one of the work vans, it replaced a 53 plate lwb 230 connect.

I have a bit of an issue when driving it. (The 2015 plate one). It's almost untrustworthy when you present it with a corner. Not just a bit, but clench your bum cheeks and hold tight sort of feeling. The old 53 plate one you could almost throw into corners without a care in the world.

I've looked at the diagrams for the back end of it (coil spring setup) but for the life of me, I cannot see an anti roll bar. Looking under it I can't see one fitted to it either.

So what I'm asking is, do they have them and if so can I retrofit one?

I imagine the best thing I could do first is get the geometry checked, but it has been bugging me as I don't drive fast, but it'd be nice to not touch cloth on every corner.

Thanks in advance for any help/suggestions/comments.

It should be planted, slight understeer but other than that they're very good. Without knowing exactly what it does in a corner it's difficult to say what the problem might be.

It just feels like the rear end wants to disappear off into the ditch if you don't crawl round it. I've a w reg swb medium roof smiley that feels more planted on a corner than the 'new' connect.

Something will be broken or missing, maybe a bush? Get it on a ramp and have a poke around, it should be obvious if the handling’s as bad as you say.

What make of tyres are on there, and are the pressures correct for the load you're carrying :?:

I've only driven a couple of later Connects, and the handling on both of those was superb, but I did have an under pressure tyre on the rear once, turned out to be a nail in the tyre, and it nearly did a pirouette on a roundabout.

Sorry about the late reply. Turns out a rear shock absorber needed replacing. I've not driven it anywhere yet, since its been fixed, but apparently it is a much more pleasant driving experience now. Lol

Yes that would do it!

I fitted a rear ARB to my 2008 Connect and it made a big difference to the handling, you can retrofit one as it’s fitted as standard to some versions.
Buy the ARB from Ford but get the bushes etc on Ebay as they are much cheaper. It’s not difficult to fit, took me about half an hour with the rear of the van on some drive-on ramps.
