Mk7 AWD Problem

Postby Morwellham » Sun Feb 21, 2021 9:55 pm

Hi All,

My 2010 AWD has got an issue. The other day when in a field selected the AWD button (orange light in button came on) but the front wheels did not come in. Had a look this weekend at the wiring to the two solenoids in the AWD box, all looked OK, also had a look at the relays they also look ok.

Turned the ignition back on and now I get a flashing orange light in the AWD button all of the time. This suggests a fault I think.

Can anyone tell me the process of how the AWD system works electrically, I cannot find any schematics anywhere.

I am thinking possibly it may have something to do with the aux battery. The radio keeps losing its code and when you turn the engine off you get a lot of clicking behind the dash and it has been known for the rev dial to go up and down.

Am I onto something with this. The voltage of the aux is 11.5 v with ignition on but not started. When the engine is started it is around 14 volts as both batteries parallel up. The aux battery is the original at 2010.

99.9999999999999999999% your front battery is f*cked mate.

I would invest in 2 new paired batteries if possible. Or buy a new battery to match the rear battery anyway. Ideally you should unplug them both and load test each 1.

You've done well to get 11 years from the battery

Having 2 batteries is a blessing and a course as you've seen.

I would get 2 x 010 type as big as you can also its about the time to replace the ignition switch its at the back of the barrel and its about 15 quid and is easy to fit.

Hi,

Yes I just had a think about what was going on this afternoon and i thought about the batteries. Make sense to look at them both as parallel paths in batteries can be a real issue.

What happens with the ignition switch does it just fail at some point and then nothing turns on or can you get a volt drop across it?.

Thanks for your help.

The front battery is used all of the time but the back links to it to start, the result being that the front 1 starts dying and can no longer sustain the fairly hungry modules but the issue here is that the rear battery is still able to start the van so you aren't aware of the problem with the front battery apart from strange things going on. Usually radio losing settings and remote locking reduced or not working reliably.

The ignition switch eventually has similar problems and from the symptoms that you suggest being that the battery is original then I am recommending the ignition switch as it is 11 years old and the headache it can save you for the price and time to swap it over.
That said, I'm not saying that the ignition switch is related but more a case of preventative maintenance.

Hi Again,

Thanks for the reply. Batteries changed and now i have the radio and an alarm, the battery was at 3volts...

Just still got the AWD out of action. The AWD light is off when pushed it goes orange but the AWD does not kick in when spinning on mud. I can see a manual switch just putting 12v to the solenoids being the answer, that way it just bypasses all of the control electronics.

Just need to remember to turn it off....

If you pm me a gmail I will send you the wiring diagram.

The brake switch and brake lights and Awd relays and pressure switches all need to work plus it may be disabled if there's a fault with the abs or water ingress into the tow socket if fitted etc. Lots to check but a fairly simple system. Also don't assume a clicking relay works as I have some on my van that click but don't :(

Hi sorry to hijack but I am having a similar problem
Would you be able to send me a wiring diagram please.
Also where abouts are the relays,
I have replaced the solenoids, and I am getting 12 v to them,
They click and squirt oil out when activated,
But still no drive to front,
Thanks in advance

I have an Mk7 2011 140 T350M AWD that although the manual AWD light switch light comes on, nothing happens. No clicks, nothing. If there are wiring diagrams available for the system I would appreciate a copy too, please PM. (tried to PM loot directly but it would not let me)

Also, does anyone know if the system automatically enagages in reverse as well as forwards? Had a situation at the weekend where I could drive into a field, and the front wheels engaged automatically, but when I came to reverse out I was only RWD and they were both slipping (got it out in the end though! ;) )

Hello all!! My name is Luis, from Spain, and I bought a 2006 FORD TRANSIT 2.4 TDCI MK7 140 CV AWD few years ago, but the AWD system is not working... I found that the solenoids and the valves are working properly, but the problem is that the hydraulic circuit that engages the front wheels is empty of oil, and there are no mechanics encouraged to low the transfer box because of lack of information about it. Neither in FORD they know how to solve it, so if there is somebody hear who knew anything about this system, please reply this post. Thank you in advance!
