2011 2.4TDI Transit Starting Problems

Postby roger64racing » Fri Dec 07, 2018 1:44 pm

Hi all, I'm new to this Forum and I hope somebody can help please? I have a a 2011 RWD 2.4 TDI Transit with engine code JXFX. I'm having intermittent starting problems, it is Fuel related, sometimes it will start first turn of the key, other times it will need at least 5 seconds winding it over or wont start at all, hot or cold. For some reason the fuel is flowing back to the tank (when not running) and part emptying the fuel filter when stood still for a while, so then I have to temporally attach an electric pump from the feed from the tank direct to the input of the filter housing to prime it back up, then it will fire up and run fine. Now I know this may sound silly but the problem is worse when the fuel tank level is bellow 1/2 a tank and the vehicle is parked uphill (so I always try and keep the tank full up and park facing downhill). I haven't plugged into any diagnostics yet, new filter has been fitted and the housing all seems fine. Just wondered if anybody had any ideas? Thanks.

If your filter head is good and fuel is still leaking back I would be checking the small green leak back O rings fitted in the top of the injectors and the return pipe the goes back to the filter head also some of the aftermarket fuel filters don't fit as well as they might and have given problems

I was going to suggest the same thing, my TDCi Fiesta had exactly the same problem, and that turned out to be a single faulty O ring on one injector, which let air into the whole system, and had to be pumped up every time it was started from cold. Luckily, that fuel system had a bleed pump already installed

Good point about the leak off pipe o'rings, I'll give that a looking at, thanks. I bought the van with snapped cam chain, fixed that no problem, fortunately there was no valve train damage, the guy who I acquired it from had the injectors out of it, so maybe one or more of the O'rings are damaged. Many thanks for your help.

If the injectors were out.....did they go back in the same spot..?? Damaged O-rings or poorly fittings are very common.

Use only Ford genuine O-ring seals mate (aboot £5) after market ones are usually to thick and split when trying to refit

When fitting/checking the o rings try smearing a little clean grease around the ring when it's in its groove, not too much if they are dry they can nip as you try to push them in
