Wow! £300 to change some £4 seals in the rocker cover - that he ought to have taken off to do the job properly in the first place.

Ask him how much Snake Oil is per Litre

Thank you Andz and Knobby.

Maybe I should just bite the bullet and take it directly to my local Ford main dealer? (Watford, Herts)

And thanks Jim. That particular mechanic said the rubber seals were £35 each. He said "When you change the copper washers the rubber ones always break and need replacing, and they are £35 each"

And the second one actually changed the copper seals and said "You don't need to change the rubber ones at the same time" and he charged me £150 to do it. At a glance there appears to be a very new looking black plastic "lid" on top of the engine now where the injectors go in. I'm going to take a photo, hang on...

These show the pooling on the right, as you look into the engine

Oil level and coolant level are spot on.

That's exactly what mine looked like, when the copper seals were leaking.

It doesn't look like new clamps were used either :?

Might it have to updated clamps fitted from new at that build year? Or replaced previously?

Sorry for being thick Jim, can you explain that in more detail?

It's hard to tell Jim, but they don't look like the newer, thicker ones. I'm slightly worried that he's chucked in some new seals without reaming the seats, and re-used the clamps and bolts, because they're definitely still leaking :?

I haven't yet had a definitive answer but the garage seems to take it as standard practice to ream out before replacing the copper washers.

I've had enough! I've booked it in to a Ford main dealer for £120 for diagnostics! I'm taking it to Hemel Hempstead next Tuesday.

Have I done the reasonable thing?

I should really edit the topic of this thread to include the black (greyish) smoke from the exhaust, but I don't believe I can do that...?
