Postby jckm2000 » Fri Nov 09, 2018 10:28 pm

Hi Folks,
I'm driving around central Europe this winter so I'd like to fit some chunky f**k off tyres to my mk6, summat like these:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/302659094545

But will they fit? How big can ya go? LWB hi-top.

That's a big tyre, I'm running 225 70R15 on my van and have about 1 - 2" of clearance on the front arches.

This is the 225 70 R15 on my van,

So the ones your looking at on a R16 would add 1.5 - 2" diameter I would think.

Thanks Ned,
There's some cheap 215/70 r16s or a larger 235/75 r16s on ebay, I guess it's gotta be the smaller ones then, shame as they're the same size as the ones I've already got.

Have a look on here and see what fits,

https://www.tyresizecalculator.com/

You might get away with bigger tyres on standard wheels, Mr Altransit had some big tyres on 16's on his mk6, can't remember the size though.

I currently have 215/75/16's on my standard Steels on our AWD

Also looking for winter tyres. I was recommend the 225/ 75/ 16's.

However is it worth trying out my custom steel wheels which are 16x6.5j ET60 5x160 or keep to the current standard steels?

Run two sets of rims on my Mk7 AWD, both sets standard steel rims with 225 75 16 one with AT for summer then MT Cooper stt for winter.
TBH the Coopers are a little noisy on the road but suprisingly civilized. Knock a bit off the MPG though.
Never had any issues with clearance or rubbing
I went for 225's because gives more choice of tread pattern and suitable load ratings

Will they have a high enough load rating?

Yes the 225/75R16C BFG AT Ko2's have more than capable load ratings
Most that size are, as there built for the larger 4x4s which are also 3.5t
But not all.....

Just use your standard size but with winter tyres.
I’ve used them for years, only had to chain up once in 10 years and that was more because of ice.
