HELP - advice needed hunting... MK6 RWD 2.4DI 90BHP

HI All
desperately needing some advice on my much loved transit. its a 2005 2.4 DI 90bhp RWD minibus converted into an off grid camper with 205k on the clock.

It generally runs around nicely and has given us some great drives around the UK including an amazing tour of outer Hebrides, we were hoping to take it Europe this year. It has always started on the button without smoking (despite the wire for the glowplug being "fried") until a month ago.

Recently it has started being more difficult to start, and runs rough at start up. Also if after starting I use some throttle it often starts "hunting" when I try to idle at around 1000 - 1200 RPM. When I is idling and I go to pull off it often cuts out, sometimes leaving me in a dangerous road position.

I have had the codes read, see the attached photo. The guy who read the codes said that the PCM or injection pump would be very expensive to fix, but there was a chance it could just be the crankshaft position sensor however because the Rev counter was working he thought the crankshaft sensor would probably be OK.

What are people's thoughts as the codes shown below? Has the crankshaft sensor caused the other codes to appear, or are there likely to be multiple faults? FYI he cleared the codes started the engine, it idled without hunting - no codes, then used the throttle, it started hunting and the codes appeared.

Codes were P1665, P1664, P1564 and P0335.

Is crankshaft sensor a job an fairly mechanically minded DIYer can tackle?

Tyhanks in advance

Lozza

You need to ensure that the info' applies to your vehicle.

Easy to start with the CKP crankshaft position sensor - check the wires connectors - could be a couple of loose bolts.
If there is an obvious fault repair it - delete/reset the DTCs - start the engine see what comes back.

Have a look below the steering wheel around the accelerator pedal and upwards for damaged wires.

On the 2.2 the CKP and the CMP work together - a slack timing chain could cause problems. The chain tensioner on some is oil pressure fed.

EDC on your fuel pump is dying....could also be a possible wiring issue, check wiring before removing the EDC.

Thanks for all your feedback.

Its an uncannily similar problem to the problem that Altransit mentions... viewtopic.php?t=172061 although the solution wasnt mentioned in that thread I rest of Spoonmas posts and it looks like he fixed it with a new/replacement ECU. Although his was a 2.2 and mine is a 2.4DI I think the problem is the same.

Its around £50 to send it off and get it fixed (a Mosfet which costs around £1 ).

Is it worth replacing CPS before dealing with the ECU? is there any chance a faulty CPS could be causing the the symptoms with the ECU?

My next question is does anybody know if it is possible and how tricky is it to remove the ECU with the pump left in Situ?

thanks in advance..

Update... sort of.

I wrote to Deiselpumprepair2 on ebay with the fault codes and description of the problem in preparation for getting the ECU off and sending for repair. He says his repair won't help the problem. I've written back and asked if he has any service that would help with the problem (as yet he has not got back to me.)

Assuming that he is correct, what else could it be?

Those codes would suggest a failing EDC on top of the pump, not that hard of a job to get another pump and fit it, or remove the edc and get it sent off for repair.
However, i'd also check for air ingress, as have seen hunting caused by small air bubbles in fuel, and the ECU tries to compensate for the poor idle by telling the EDC on the pump to alter fuelling, which if no improvement will log a faulty EDC code in the PCM/ECU.

Ignore the crank position code, if the van EVER cuts out whilst key is still on, this code will set, its usually a complete red herring wen you are having fuel or pump issues.

Cheers Andy. Ive been away for a few weeks, I am now back and hoping to use the camper over Easter...

It seems strange that a guy who repairs the ECU (for around £60 ) doesnt think his service will fix it. Whilst hes open about his service not helping he was very unhelpful in not saying why he thought that.

If I cancelled the codes (another Q regarding that follow) and it never died whilst running the CPS code should never return? If it starts and runs after the CPS code is cleared and it doesn't return is this a good test that the CPS is actually OK? I think I read somewhere that the CPS codes sometimes appear a while after it has been running.

Does anyone know what the cheapest reader for compatibility with Forscan and a 2006 (last year of mfct I think) Mk6?

thanks again

thanks again Loz

Forscan recommend two different readers/cables these days, the latest version of Forscan isn't "fully compatible" with the old "Tunnel-Rat" cable we used to recommend.

Either one of these will work:

https://www.obdlink.com/products/obdlin ... ef=forscan

I have both and can confirm they both work fine.
