Engine noises!

Postby James-B93 » Fri Dec 07, 2018 12:51 pm

I have a couple of noises coming from the engine on my 85ps 280 that I want to make sure aren’t too worrying!

The first is a tappety noise when I get high up in the revs. It doesn’t sound like piston slap or the knocking you’d get from a bottom end issue. It appears to be coming from the drivers side of the engine. I don’t get a rattle at all on start up. Only this strange fizzy tappety noise. Does it sound identifiable??

My second noise is a jingly noise that I can only describe as sounding as if a bolt has come lose and a washer is vibrating around? It doesn’t seem to change with engine revs at all or with rotation of the wheels/drivetrain etc. I haven’t had chance to get under and look if anything is lose just yet but more hoping this is an easy-ish fix?

I could possibly try and get a video of the noises when I next drive the van if the descriptions don’t seem to sound like anything obvious.

I am also yet to carry out a service on it but will do soon and will also be sure to put some injector cleaner through and will also be starting to use a small amount (250 ml) of 2 stroke oil in with each tank to help keep the injectors clean and lubed up!

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

leaking manifold gasket and a bolt out on the exhaust causing the jingly rattle.

Quite possibly. I’ll be sure to check it once I’m back home. If not I will try and get a video of the noises to help. Does it sound like a possible timing chain issue or injector issues?

Now the knackered injector sound i could help with as one of mine is making a right racket. I have performed some diagnosis and know it is an injector and not my chain.

What’s the best course of action to sort injectors? Do people recommend getting them sent away etc or is it the sort of thing you can strip easily without special tools. Have done injectors before but on a very agricultural 3 cylinder Lister engine! None of this electrical coding nonsense!

Never stripped an injector but just waited over 3 weeks for one to sodding turn up so i can replace the one i think is kaput, and see about getting them repaired 1 at a time.

I managed to get a video of the noises...taken on a private road...
Easiest way I could think to post it here was to upload it to my YouTube channel so hope I’m not breaking any forum rules?!

Let me know if anything springs to mind...between 13-17 second you can hear the jingling quite well

Anyone have any ideas? Maybe bearings in drive belt pulleys somewhere?

Hi
Did you get to the bottom of this, I have a similar noise on a van I have just collected?
