LDV Convoy with 2.5DI MK5 Loss much power when engine warm

Postby LDVwithTransitEngine » Sun Dec 02, 2018 5:14 am

Hi there,

this is my first post so don`t be too rude to me.

I have a LDV Convoy 2001 with the Transit 2.5Di mk5 engine without turbo. Should be the Epic diesel pump.

A month ago the engine control light came on and there was a notable loss of power in high rev´s (can't rev over 3000 with gear in without it goes well over 3000) also it feels like there is no difference between the accelerator is completely down of only half the way. I went to a garage to diagnose.
It has shown:
P0113 IAT Sensor Circuit high input
P0110 IAT Sensor Circuit
P1606 main relay malfunction(power hold)
P1191 key line voltage.

The mechanic was trying to delete the protocol but wasn't abel to do it. He meant I should drive the van like normal he can handle it....
So I left the mechanic and run the van for arround 2 weeks with the engine check light on. Maybe important the check light don't went on straight with the start. It wen't on when the engine was warm after arround 10km sometimes more sometimes less then 10km. So I drove the van and after the 2 weeks the check light don't went on anymore and I had all power all the time.

Arround 5000km and 1,5 month later i take the van for a full service to a mechanic.
-Cambelt/Waterpump
-Filters
-Oil change
-rocker cover gasket
-alternator and power steering belt
-new coolant
are the done works.

I collected my van and after a short 5 min drive the engine check light went on again and again no power. I went straight back and they diagnose the IAT Sensor too. I decide to change the sensor. After the change the check light doesn't went on anymore but after some km after the start again no power. Exact the same symptoms. Maybe notable: Most of the times the lack of power occures when the engine is warm and I need to slow down or need to stop on a red light or a sharp corner.

I have ordered a EGR Valve blanking plate cause I thought maybe my egr valve can't close properly and there is to much exhaust gas in the diesel mixture.
At the time I wait for the part and hope it will fix it but my feeling say's me it doesn't..

So do you guys have any thoughts for me.
What can be the problem?
I read the torque sleeve can be the problem but can't imagine why the problem only occures when the engine is warm and I need to slow down or stop if it is the torque sleeve.

I would be very happy about your suggestions!

PS: Sorry for the bad english, i'm from germany.

On an LDV, a non-turbo engine will have a "bunch of bananas" manifold on the top of the engine, and will normally have a Bosch pump.

If you have a Lucas EPIC pump, then you should also have a turbo fitted, as they aren't set up to run without a turbo :?

Hello , I have also the same problem , Ford turbo 2,5 TD with Epic lucas pump . During winter until no , no problem , but during summer when it is hot and the engine is hot aswel , The engine suddenly stops running when shifting gear or slowing down for traffic . Once stopped on the side I can start immediately but when i go high in RPM ( plus 2500 rpm ) and shift gear it stops again . Sometimes I can drive 1000 km without problems sometimes I need to stop every 5 km . The only way to get to my destination is to shift gear very early and stay very low in RPM in fifth gear . Speed max 70 miles an hour .
Is your problem solved ?

At the moment my problem isn't solved.. The car go to a diesel specialist on tuesday for diagnostic. Hopefully they can figure out what is going on. But in my case the problem occures every time when the engine is over 3-5 sec on neutral rpm. Only when the engine is warm, if the engine is cold i can stay on neutral rpm's for ages and all is good. When I restart the engine it is solved to the next stop when the rpm is on 800 for more than 3-5 sec. My sugestions are fail of the diesel pump or something wrong with the turbo like sticky vanes or a fail wit the MAF sensor.
I will let you know after tuesday.

All these EPIC problems can easily be solved by binning the horrible things and fitting a mech type pump, problem solved....for good...it can be done for around £250 or less if you can find a pump etc
