Lucas EPIC intermittent problem

Postby keranski » Sun Nov 25, 2018 7:51 pm

Hi all. I'm new to the forum (obviously I join the forums when I have problems, blame me  ).
My name is Trayan and I am from Bulgaria.
I have a second gen (1999) Transit 101hp fitted with the EPIC FAIL :D
The pump is going crazy. When I start the engine (starts fine) and I drive, the first minutes the bus is fine, it's full on power, no problem.
After a several minutes it goes in limp home mode and a check engine light appears.
If I restart the engine it goes well again, again a few minutes or second time maybe less and the problem occurs again.
The problem is I live in the god-forgotten land of Bulgaria and nobody wants to deal with a Lucas, nobody has the proper diagnostics and nobody has the knowledge
I bought the Ford three years ago, it had the problem before, but wasn't a problem for me (restart the engine, drive a few km's, restart and so on...), but now it's time to sell it, because I don't need it anymore. And nobody wants to buy it broken :D
I don't want to spend a fortune on the bus (like fitting a new pump or a bosch pump).
So is there a way that the timing is out and I just need to change the timing belt (I haven't changed it, I don't know the last time it's changed) and is this a way to fix the problem?
Or maybe something else?
Thanks all in advance and best wishes :P

For your model (Mk5) you need solenoid plunger No. Delphi 9160-562B

Try do it - exchange plunger. It is possible to do by yourself.

Look for MinorMatt posts - this guy is Guru about EPIC. He wrote thread with good pictures how to do this work.

If you haven't changed the belt, then I would do that first
1994 Mk4 SWB 115 Minibus 70ps Di (R.I.P.)
1997 Mk5 SWB 115 Minibus 70ps Di (Gone, but not forgotten!)

2008 Mk7 SWB T280 Medium Roof 85PS 2.2 TDCi - Also Vantunered

Not the symptoms of ESOS failure.

Either cam ring seizing or cambelt needing to be changed

keranski,Turkey produced Transit Otosan with a mechanical Bosch VE injection pump with a 100 hp turbo-corrector.
I myself have such a fuel pump.
I understand your attitude to the Turks, but no one bothers to look for such a Bosch VE fuel pump in Turkey.

Well, I changed the timing belt. It was not the problem.
The bus seems to be better, no limp mode, no check engine, but still out of power. When stopped and I go with wide open throttle, and in all other wide open throttle situations, the nose dives??? Still very weak on power. Can this be fuel filter related? Or something clogging the fuel sistem? Thanks a lot all.

Well, changed the fuel filter today.
Nothing.
Any suggestions? I'm really very mad of the ford and I need it gone soon, so I will have to fit the Bosch manual pump I suggest?
Do I have any other variant, any possibility it's not the fuel pump that is causing the problem?
Thanks a lot.

What about smoke - is it? Black, white, blue? How it smell?
Check inlet pipes with air filter and manifold, turbo, EGR plus throttle (they are controlled by the same vacuum transducer).

Did you touch start-stop valve with solenoid plunger?

No smoke at all.I haven't touched the plunger.
In Wednesday I will check all the piping and all the vacuums.
Can somebody explain to me where is the lift pump from the reservoir located and how to check it?

Same problems here. I have a Ford Transit Nugget MK3, 1993, 2.5 TD, with an electronic injection pump (Lucas Epic DSA947). I guess you need a newer one. But before you buy a new one, check the magnetic switch of the pump you have right now.

Nu the wat: if anyone has a spare DSA947 please contact me!
