New member, urgent help needed

Postby LifeinTransit » Thu Nov 08, 2018 3:56 pm

I recently bought a 91 mk3 ex minibus camper conversion. Twin wheel axle.

Drove it up to Wales the other day for an mot, just before arrival felt knocking, thought it was the prop but turned out wheel nuts had worked loose on rear right twin wheel.
Luckily nobody got hurt. The studs and bolts have been damaged, plus these tapered split washers that go over the studs after being fed through the hub (what are these called??!!)
Ford are no help, they can't find any of these parts.

I need 6 of each of these, either used or new, or a pointer in the right direction, part numbers, what are they called etc.
Have tried everywhere else, so will appreciate any help you can give.

Will upload photos in a sec

Studs and nuts on left side have left-hand thread, on right side right-hand thread .

Studs - on picture nr.2.
Nuts - on picture nr. 9.

Thanks for that.

But it doesn't show the tapered split washers that go over the studs once they're fed through the drum.

My first picture shows the tapered split washer, albeit very worn down.

Those double taper washers should still be available from Ford I'm guessing the latest twin wheelers will be using them still.

Are there any breakers near where you are?

My brother in law works for Ford and there's no trace of them on the system. Just can't get them.

The later mk3 has 15" wheels with shorter studs and flat surfaces on the wheels. Mine has 14" wheels longer studs and recesses on the wheels for the tapered washers.

Been to all the breakers in the area, no luck at all.
Need to find someone breaking a twin wheel mk3, maybe tipper truck, old minibus or something.
Tried all over eBay too.

Never had this much trouble trying to find parts!

It would even be a help to know what these washers were called so I could search for them. Cos I'm sure they're not called washers.

This (arrowed in red) is the washers in talking about. These ones are the wrong size washers and studs (I think the hub is off an LDV)

Image

I need the studs, washers and 24mm nuts (The ones in this picture are 27mm)
These used to be common on mk3 Transits back in the day, I just don't understand why I can't find any now.

I went back in time to the roots. In Transit Mk1 there is this washer, called cone, No. 9 on the picture, finis 1546216, part No. 71VB 1K004 DA
But in later models Mk3/4/5 isn't actually (look for picture). So - I don't think you need this washers called "cone" ...

Thanks but I do need this washer, the wheels cannot safely line up without them.

Here is a picture of the actual undamaged washer, I need to be able to buy these

The part number you gave me doesn't show up in any searches.

No images showing here. If you look at the bottom left there's a button "upload attachment". Load the pic into your PC then hit the button and follow the instructions then we can see what you need. A breakers yard is your best bet.

You can see all images if you are logged.

I still have doubts. Rim centering itself on hub and central bore.
Of course - now central bore in rim is destroyed and also destroyed is hub - now is very big slack between rim and hub. Compare central bore in front and in rear wheels.
I think you should exchange hub and rims...

Only rims mounted on hubs without central flange needs tapered nuts for centering wheel on hub. This situation is on Timken rear axle - for example. Timken has flat hub without flange for central bore.
In Salisbury rear axle wheel is centred by central bore on hub. This is confirmed by the fact that in spare parts catalogue for model Mk3/4 and 5 this cone does not exist. Image
