mk1 brake servo

Postby gringo » Mon Dec 26, 2022 12:36 pm

has anyone information on getting a replacement brake servo for a mk1.

i normally have to pump the pedal once or twice so it doesnt go down too far when braking, does this mean the servo is on its way out ??
its a mk1 one transit campervan, 1972, has front disc axle.
thanks

Your symptoms sound more like air bubbles in the fluid :? If the servo isn't working, the pedal would normally go hard with no braking assistance.
You can check the servo by pumping the pedal (engine off) until the pedal goes hard, then, by continuing to hold down the pedal and starting the engine, the servo should move the pedal down taking away that hardness :)

thanks for the reply altransit.
today i pumped the brake couple times with the engine off, then started the engine still pressing down on the pedal,
the pedal went a further down and the force got softer.
i think i understand what you were explaining so my next job in the next week or so is to bleed the brakes on all four wheel cylinders with new brake fluid.
thanks again

If the brakes get better by pumping the pedal it could be adjustment needed, (usually the rear adjuster siezed/not working properly) pumping the pedal takes up the adjustment.

Yes, good point Chug.
If the rears have auto adjusters, then they're notorious for not working properly, and need freeing off or manual adjustment :)
