Fitting different engines loose there MOT exemption
Unless it was an engine regularly used 30 year's ago

So you should be OK with your unique
2500cc rover V8 engine

Its not whether the engine was in use 30 years ago its whether it was fitted 30 or more years ago.

"Engine
Alternative cubic capacities of the same basic engine and alternative original equipment engines are not considered to be a substantial change.

If the number of cylinders in an engine is different from the original it’s likely to be, but not necessarily, the case that the current engine is not alternative original equipment." On that basis, as the Di was never fitted to the mk1 - so I think you've lost your MOT exemption.

However there is also a statement in the guidance

"It does not count as a ‘substantial change’ if:

they are changes of a type which can be demonstrated to have been made when vehicles of the type were in production or within 10 years of the end of production"

I'm fairly sure early 2.5Di from Mk2s would have been fitted in mk1s within 10 years of the mk1 going out of production. I think you are probably fairly safe to say its MOT exempt - but you will need evidence of mk1s being converted to 2.5Di before 1987 (which shouldn't be too hard!)
