CV boot recommendation

Just passed the MOT Today- but an advisory says have to have inner cv boot for the next one .

choices choices ..would like to go ford oem ..but too expensive at £71

so did a bit or research.

and it seems that CV boots made out of a material called "thermoplast" or "thermoplastic" are the best

would everyone agree with that.?

Plenty of time, will leave the fitment to a few nice warm days this summer, never done an inner before ..does the outer joint have to come off to fit it .quite hard searching and finding one at the right price on ebay...

I wish I could help, but the last time I replaced a CV joint boot was on my Mini in the 1980's That had a circlip on the outer end of the drive shaft that was a challenge to remove from the joint, and a bigger challenge to get back in, so it never went back in

You're probably on the original

I recently had to use a "universal" boot on my cars inner CV due to needing it road worthy ASAP for hospital appointments.

It may not last the 25 years it's predecessor did, although I don't think it's going to fail anytime soon.

The gkn lobro boot kits are good quality but the thermoplastic ones can be a lot more difficult to get on than the rubber type.

Well there is a lot of clackerty clack sounds coming from them, maybe I should be in a lower gear, maybe 3rd instead of forth with this 20mph speed limit here ...but sure they should not be clackerty clacking as much as they are doing. which makes me think they are on the way out anyway, note: they don't do it on opposite locks in tight circles- not driven on new ones to see how they normally should be! . But 20mph here has certainly made it noticeable, maybe i should send the bill to Drakeford

Here is old mot, back some years, that's it, here we have a cheap pattern parts failure now has 138,000 miles

anyway the very next day after this weeks 2024 mot ...its failed now spraying out grease.

its black though ....so grease was replaced with the wrong sort in 2017

The original yellow grease (called tripod grease) is impossible to get at a reasonable price..
I've bought just the boot - a borg and beck boot.

but if i find play slop in the joint because of previous owners grease botch or failure because it was left for long time in 2016 / 2017, so maybe had dirt in it ..... if so, I will Not hesitate to buy whole new drive shaft.

Ive researched this yellow tripod grease , testimonies on the net and no one can make their mind up about it , some saying needed for the needle roller bearings . some saying black molly too thick ..etc

but i do know that the old black moly grease..isn't so bad as they are making out, it has some good properties ..i know ..such is that grease ..whenever its under load, or is squeezed, it liquefies so it will get into those needle rollers.

It would be nice to know other opinions

Not changed a boot for a long time but it was always a gray Greece that came in the tube with the boot think it was a graphite Greece we used to have large bucket of it at work and used that saved the tube for home

Yes, I was going to add that earlier

It was always called CV joint grease on the packet that came with the boot, but looked pretty much to be plain old graphite grease

The manufacturers put a special yellow/golden/brown grease in the inner CV and the old moly grey/black grease in the outer.

Think these tripod joints were patented by GKN ..who make the special yellow grease.

when you go looking for tripod grease, you only find motorsport links, so only they seem to care about it.

Things are getting more complicated nowadays back in the day antifreeze was blue power steering was red ATF engine oil was mineral oil EP 90 gearbox oil brake fluid was Lockheed or Girling gone are the days when you had 5 drums in the oil store that covers the fleet now every manufacturer has its own specifications like Ford are doing now with the wet belt claims if you can’t prove you used the correct specification oil on a service receipt thy are knocking it back.
But back to the point the last time I changed a c/v boot was 10 years ago used to do loads and they all had the grey grease in them .

The new CV boot arrived today ..just a heads up, to say this Borg and Beck one is every bit as good as the original ford one ..had been to europarts the other day and i had a look and rejected their CV boot because it looked and felt too flimsy. so i ordered off ebay.

Now to get myself syked up for the job ...wish i had not of watched .. youtuber "botch it and leggit" struggling to take one out, when he was changing a clutch on a connect, as he made it look like it was the end of the world.!

just got to lever it out tomorrow.

Got it out -- about 30 mins

Very small gap to get a lever through and then not much room at the back of the shaft to pry..and tried all the levers in picture below with no success

The last one the smallest of the lot worked ..even then i had to tap the end of it so drove it in like a wedge

anyhow if any ones interested the tool is called a Dunlop TL10 vintage tyre lever ..worked a treat.
