MK7 2.2 injector unscewing in Head

Postby nicwest » Sun Feb 18, 2024 5:36 pm

Not sure if this has been covered, but my attempts at searching showed nothing.

2007 2.2 110hp in retrospect this has been blowing for ages but I only realized when it pressurized itself and started leaking oil dramtically.

2 were hand tight, one had a bit of carbon build up but the bad one was really tight- got it moving eventually but it was squeaking oddly, then stopped and got progressively looser one way, tighter the other. Looking at the ones I have got out I'm concluding that the end cap is still seized on the head and the injector has unscrewed from it.

I've got a few ideas on how to get it out, but will either destroy the injector ( is it dead already) or rocker cover and am still not sure if it would work, wonder if there is a standard procedure to handle this?

Those injectors DONT screw in or out, it's just the 2 clamps(with 8mn bolts) that hold the injectors in

The spray tip may have "bulged" and sticking in the head, making it difficult to remove...not too uncommon. Often caused by small amounts of water in the fuel.

A slide hammer may be your only option.

Yes I know, the others just pulled out , the tight one is so tight that the tip of injector is actually unscrewing from the main body when I twist it anti clockwise.

Yes I'm sure , the van is nearly rusted out, I'll replace the bare minimum to get it up and running, doubt it will get a new MOT

Is there an attachment for slide hammers to fit these injectors ? And will the injector be dead if it came 1/4 turn unscrewed? It's been blowing / leaking for ages , I think it's carbon buildup, the others were all easy and oily.

Not sure if I was clear about what has happened , so made this handy info graphic.
Injector shown lifted out with no effort. Have shown what I think is happening to the one I can't remove from the head.

Well if you look at the video, he shows the pry point he is using with a prybar.

I cant see how you could put a slide hammer on it, I can suggest you tighten a jubilee clip around it then improvise a slide hammer out of threaded rod and a weight.
Yes, i suppose if you try unscrewing it, it might unscrew parts of the injector and it will drop in the cylinder ..so don't twist on it ..pull or pry .

Thanks Mark, id watched that video when I was gathering information before trying this, it's a while different level of stuck unfortunately. Jubilee clip would just tear off. Might be able to make a double c clip that would hook under the lugs of the injector then bolt that to a slide hammer..

Metalworker0 hose clip idea may work if you can get slide hammer hook clamped on if enough room at this part in pic, if you have an old injector lying about you could unscrew the top off and weld on a bracket to it fir the slide hammer and fit to stuck injector just be careful not to lose any of the internals just leave them in place and screw modified top on, have you tried turning engine over as your trying to twist and lever out ??Image

I tried turning it over, but its so tight I didn't really expect that to do anything. Dont think theres anyway a hose clamp would preovde enough grip. I could weld bits to it and and bodge up a a slide hammer ( don't own one, currently) , In the end decided to buy the proper kit- does what you suggest but all made up. Under £50 for everything. Even if it doesn't work ill soon own a slide hammer!
