Erberspacher/webasto/planar heaters.

Postby loot » Fri Dec 07, 2018 5:34 pm

Right chaps I've fitted mine fully tonight with the vents and ducting etc so it is all good, only have the on off power control panel but plan on adding a 7day timer.

It blows out some good heat, i don't think ill use it mainly while I'm in the van but more to preheat the van so I intend on leaving the van and it come on before I return so that the van is toasty when I come along.

2 thoughts I have are, 1 is that safe? I think it will be fine but unoccupied flame devices are the devils playground I think :|
And 2,it feels quite smooth and the power consumption stats are good iirc but I'm fearful that it'll flatten my batteries, :x

So, any long term users got any thoughts? :P

If you are wondering about the pipes there's 80mm into the 3 way and 80 out into the rear and 60 out into the front and there's an adjustable flap on the 3way so I can adjust the flow between front to back. Cool eh.

The Eberspacher and the gas propex I’ve had and the webasto and thrmotron early BT and the hydronic ones my mate had have all cut off when battery volts drop to 10.5v to 11v .
As for the flame side they are supposed to be sealed unit so to keep safe the only Serious problem I’ve heard about with a heater was with a propex in a sleeper cab the jet fell off the end of the burner and nearly gassed the drive
When you turn it off always run it at full power for a minute or so to stop it cokeing up

They should be safe left unattended, but saying that I haven't left mine for more than a few hours, and as Dumper says they shutdown when battery voltage drops, but I run mine from my leisure batteries so no worries if it runs them down, but they will run for a good while on a decent battery, when testing mine years ago it ran for good 10 hours without flattening the battery.

I have a Mikuni one fitted in my camper. I went away for 5 days in October and used it about an hour before bed and when I got up in the morning for a couple of hours. The diesel consumption was hard to guess but I didn't notice any massive movement on the fuel gauge. As for the power draw from the leisure battery that was good too, which meant I never needed to find an hookup to top up, and that was running a 25 litre compresser fridge.

I could run the d5W in my ex BT Smiley all night without it overly affecting starting of a cold DI.

It was only connected to a bike radiator in the back, but the battery also had to cope with a bike cooling fan running intermettently at low speed as well - on a thermostat to blow warm air if temp in load space dropped so far.

Thanks for the info guys :D

I wanted to set up some kind of power system where it would turn on power to it with the 7 day timer but I think that when it turns on it takes a bit to heat up then turn off it keeps running but just turns the fire off, it sucked a bit of paper into the inlet fan as I was messing in that area with ducts and it was noisy so I turned it off and stopped the fan which wanted to keep going and I saw smoke come from the injector /glow plug on the side, so yes it wants to be allowed to force cool down after switching off.

I'll just leave power to it but a toggle switch on the drivers seat or somewhere.

Probably need to road test it before leaving it.

So you think 2-3 hours max won't use loads of power or fuel then?

When I’m useing mine on a car rally’s I am in the van for upto 8 hours running a safety radio most of the time my D3 airtronic is just ticking over the mpg readout on the dashboard probably drops about point 1 or 2 mpg a gallon mine is running off two 120 amp batteries so never have a problem but the van radio if on all day will shut down and after 7 ish hours and I have to run van for ten minutes to get it to stop on for about another 2 hours or so the batteries are the original and just over 3 years old

Wow fantastic, puts my mind at ease 8)

I do think I have a slightly dead front battery though so I might replace them both for some good ones.

The main power draw is when the glow plug is heating up, after that it's just the fan, so it should be quite low. You could feed it from a separate fuel tank, say a 10 litre one and run it on kerosene or red diesel . It is said that they burn and run cleaner on say kerosene and are less likely to soot up.

Just been looking up the data on mine. Fuel consumption is 0.12 - 0.24 (l/h) and rated power consumption, 14 - 29w. Don't know how this compares to yours Loot. Mine is a 2kw one.

Mines 5kw it spins up fast to start with and I then turn the power it down and I think it shows down then. Whether it does that all the time I haven't used it enough to find out.

I got a plastic 10l tub with it but opted for the in tank straw kit online.

That fuel consumption is good isn't it.

Doubt I'd allow the van to run low enough for me to worry about using mine but at 5kw it'll be a bit over double yours so even after use it'll be less than a pint an hour so. 9.68 hours per gallon :P

Must be hot in your van with 5kw. I find mine is more than warm enough. Like you say the fuel comp is good, especially for how much more comfortable it makes the van to be in when the temperature outside drops.

.

I want to get it so I can jump in the van at 8am and it be warm and a bonus would be cleared glass.
Then when we go for runs I can turn it on and go for an hour or 2 and get back in the van and it be similar to when we jumped out.

Being a runner though the difference of outside temp of below 5 degrees and 5 degrees + can be the difference of being freezing and having hats and gloves etc to sweating like fook

I have a couple of timers I've modded 1 so it works on 12v and I have WiFi control over it too my phone but that's overkill, the other is a combi 7 day timer 12v and has a rechargeable battery so it keeps settings which is good because I can turn it on and off and it'll keep the settings for a month or so.
