Replacing mk7 gearbox bearings

Postby myvanhatesme » Wed Feb 22, 2012 11:24 pm

Just wondering how long it would take to do and how difficult are they to replace please?
Also If a garage did the work what sort of price would the job cost?

Any replies appreciated, cheers.

There are a number of different gearboxes with a different number of forward gears, FWD models incorporate the final drive so have more bearings to replace than RWD. The answer for any type is that it's not cost effective for a garage to do, they would almost certainly fit an exchange unit with the associated peace of mind warranty that goes with it. Unless you have in depth knowledge of gearbox construction you should not tackle this job as a DIY project. Gearboxes are very straight forward components but the parts are expensive to buy individually.

I have done this years ago for a Land Rover and the box rattled afterwards (worked OK but was noisy). Building up a gearbox often requires specialist kit, in order to get the clearences right and I suspect that the Transit is no exception. El transito is right, the bits are expensive and an exchange box is way the simplest / easiest option.

Depends on the box and the problems, when we used to get polos, golfs, nearly all front wheels vws,and it was noisy in the first 3 to 4 gears it took 20 mins to change the bearings causing the noise.
Astras, and cavaliers you got 3 hours to change all the bearings inc diff.

so what ever the problem is,take it to and expert who knows the box.
ACCIDENTS ARE NOT FUNNY UNLESS ITS SOMEONE ELSE.....THEN ITS HILARIOUS

5 speed MT75 RWD, not too bad to do but you need pullers to pull the box apart and pull it back together
6 speed MT82 RWD, dont even entertain it, gearbox specialist
5 speed MTX75 FWD no special tools needed to pull apart but the bearings are pre-loaded so to need to set the box up otherwise the box will rattle
6 speed MM6 FWD havent had one apart yet but seen one apart

Hi, sorry to open a very old thread but has anyone any info on the procedure to set up the fwd 5 speed box when replacing the bearings?? I have the bearing kit here and as I've bought a 2015 mk8 the mk7 is going off the road to tighten up for sale.
It's noisy in all gears and at idle but at idle if i put my foot on the clutch it goes away, all gears are engaging fine.
Any help is much appreciated, thanks, Gary
