1999 Mk5 RWD automatic oils

Postby gassygassy » Wed May 01, 2024 11:10 pm

I've just bought a 1999 motorhome based on a 2.5TD Transit automatic. It's done 65,000 miles and I don't suppose anyone in its 25 years has ever changed the rear diff oil or the gbox ATF. What spec do I look for for the diff oil and the ATF?
Unfortunately I have in the garage a new 5 litre can of genuine Mercedes ATF for a Sprinter. Like other Mercedes lubricants it is green but it doesn't have any specification other than the MB part number which is MB 236.15. Of course I would like to use this on the Transit if I can - but without any spec I can't see how to do it without losing sleep.
I guess the Transit uses the usual red stuff but I don't have any.
Any advice would be welcome. Other than "Oh No you haven't bought one of those have you?"
Oddly it has two engine batteries wired in parallel, one each side of the engine compartment. I've never seen that before.

Well because you cant really change all the oil at once because there will be a couple of litres in the torque converter ..even if it was right oil for the box ..red and green will make ..brown ...so you would end up with mucky looking brown oil .

I searched google...in the early 2005 ish days and for quite a few years after . there were people asking in merc forums; why is my box oil green....there were people telling owners ..if the oil in the boxes was green ..then there is something wrong with the box. :D eating bronze copper etc
Later years up till present ...people asked ..and no one had any real explanation...so i guess merc forums don't do tech. and i cant find any more out than that.

all the best.mark

Its a red ATF Dexron II oil for the gearbox

Diff is EP90 or EP80/90

And 2 batteries wired in parallel is an option on all mk5s, and its standard on automatics as they "drag" a bit more on start up than a manual
