Hello! - 2005 Ford Transit VJ Manual - is it a SWB or MWB??

Postby RauchRauch86 » Mon Sep 25, 2023 3:39 am

Hello everyone,

First post so I apologise if I am posting in the wrong section/ forgot any of the forum rules!

I live in Australia, don't own a Transit yet - I wish! :D I am looking for one for a van conversion and I've now inspected a few.

For a while I thought there were only MWB and LWB out there, with MWB being Ford's Short Wheel Base, the smallest you could get let's say.

I eventually came across one advertised as SWB, went to check it out and it was actually too small for me.
My new pick is advertised as MWB, but from the online pics looks the same as the SWB I saw the other week.
Now I wonder if there is just some confusion between sellers and buyers!

I can't just go and inspect the vehicle as it is in another state (Australian distances hey) so I am trying to find a way to understand if
it is SMALL or MID, by the ad pictures or asking information to the owner?

What is the best way to see SWB and MWB differences? What should I ask?
I've seen a few topics about it but couldn't really pinpoint a definitive way.
Also, is there a website where you can access official transit dimensions for every model?

Thanks so much everyone, hope it wasn't too long of a read for a first topic! :)

This is a SWB, if you look at the gap between the rear of the SLD and the wheel arch, it's quite small. On a MWB it is significantly bigger

This is also a SWB but with a medium roof

If it's a MWB with a medium roof, the SLD is taller that the passenger door and the gutter is higher up.

Does this help? If not I'll try and find some more piccies 8)

Thanks so much!
Sorry it took me so long to answer, while your reply was so quick!
I think at this point both the vans I've seen were MWB. I managed to find two pics, one is real low res but you surely have a better eye for this.

To me they look the exact same!
