Where to buy parts? (Idler pulley)

Postby firewalker » Mon Apr 29, 2024 3:24 pm

Are there any recommendations on where to go?
I remember a specialist mail order company some years ago but can't seem to find them.

I'm looking for an idler pulley, I've seen them on fleabay at about £12, my local motor factor quotes about £34 as do some ebay dealers.

Ebay link:

Is it false economy to buy the cheaper one or is it all down to mark up and the same thing in terms of what you get?
This was last changed around 20k miles/5 years ago by a mechanic, seems a short lifespan.

Have you priced up a Genuine Ford one ? Sometimes you’ll be surprised how reasonable parts are from dealers.

Yes, nothing on their online shop at all when I type in my van details, it's 22 year old so probably not in their interests.

Picked an idler up from the local parts shop which they had to order in.
Not as cheap as Fleabays tenner jobs at £25, nor as expensive as the £45 option on Europarts.
It matches the quality of the one that came off as far as I can tell (last replaced about 5 years ago), and came with bolt and spacer.

Only it didn't fix the squeak
Tensioner next, which I did order online from TPUK as I remember using them in the past. Probably got tipped off on here.
Pricewise they weren't the very cheapest but still less than the idler pulley alone, which I think is used as a part on the tensioner as well - go figure.
I saw some for £18 but since the last one's only lasted 20k miles the thinking is that the garage fitted a cheap one so better off using a Transit parts dealer. Tensioner + Belt for £40.
Fingers crossed it fixes the noise! For longer than last time!
